Letter: Beer will vote her conscience as mayor

There are few people who will offer themselves for public service without expectations of personal gain. Donnie Beer is one of these. She has served this city for 17 years as a City Council member. She is experienced, dedicated and qualified to occupy the mayor’s position.

She works hard; she is accessible to everyone and she listens and responds to those who need help. She is an independent thinker; she votes her conscience; she is not a part of any special interest group or organization.

I know that when hard decisions have to be made, even against popular opinion, she votes the way she feels is best for the whole community. Her vote on Clarendon for one was a time that really showed her courage. Facing a hostile audience is not easy even for the professional politicians. It is a no-brainer to take the easy way out and please the crowd. Now, after all of the dire predictions of massive development and the loss of the Air Station, good things are evolving. Hundreds of acres have been put under a conservation easement and hundreds more to be protected are in the works. Many changes to the development standards and the development agreement have been added.

I have watched her work for the city and have been impressed with her dedication and loyalty, and am working to help her get elected mayor of Beaufort.
